Ry Miller – Bass

Ry Miller is a 21-year-old bassist and audio engineer whose sound is as grounded as it is thoughtful. Raised in Lower Merion and currently studying at Temple University, Ry came to music through the influence of his father — a campfire guitarist and singer whose musical spirit made a lasting impression. In fourth grade, Ry picked the bass, not knowing it would become his lifelong instrument and pathway into Philadelphia’s jazz community.

His playing is shaped by the subtle power of influences like Sam Jones, Israel Crosby, and Vicente Archer, while his artistic voice is also inspired by Joe Henderson’s creativity and the genre-defying textures of producer Mid-Air Thief. Ry’s musical journey includes time at Settlement Music School and virtual jazz training with the Clef Club during the COVID-19 era.

As a bassist, Ry’s ethos is all about vibe and intention — choosing lines and tones that fit the room, the players, and the audience. Whether supporting others or leading a band himself, Ry aims to inspire both jazz lovers and first-timers alike. He’s also an active live sound engineer, currently working with Leo Gadson’s Producer’s Guild at the Community Education Center in West Philly, helping produce high-quality jazz concerts each month.

Ry describes himself as someone who has always felt a step behind but deeply grateful for the opportunities to play alongside greats and grow from the experience. Being part of The New Philly Sound 2025 is, in his words, “right up my alley” — a chance to share the magic of jazz with new audiences and collaborate with musicians who push and inspire him.

“Jazz is magic. It’s all time, progress will come if you put time in. No one has every right answer, and no one has a wrong answer. Everyone understands life and music in their own way.”
