Spring Masterclass Series in Philadelphia

The Heart of Jazz Foundation is launching a three-part spring student jazz clinic series, building on the success of its first educational initiative last October featuring world-renowned bassist John Patitucci.

The series is part of the Foundation’s three-fold mission: to provide four-year university scholarships and mentorship to underserved students pursuing careers in jazz; to raise jazz awareness and create events in the communities where it once flourished; and to provide performance opportunities for jazz musicians of all ages.

This year’s master classes bring three internationally celebrated artists to Philadelphia.

Pianist and composer Amina Figarova (March 10, 3:30 pm, Rendell Room/Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts) is known for her lyrical compositions and global career spanning major festivals and concert halls.

Vibraphonist and multi-instrumentalist Warren Wolf (April 29, 3:30 pm, Rendell Room/Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts), a Berklee-trained performer and Temple University professor, has collaborated with jazz greats including Wynton Marsalis and Christian McBride.

The series concludes May 8th, 1:00 pm at Penn Live Arts/Zellerbach Theatre with six-time Grammy winner Arturo O’Farrill, a visionary pianist, composer, and founder of the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, widely recognized as a leading voice in Latin jazz.

Open to high school and college students, the free clinics provide a rare opportunity to learn directly from master artists while advancing The Heart of Jazz’s mission to inspire young musicians and strengthen jazz in the communities where it once flourished.
