Two New Scholarships Awarded
The Heart of Jazz (HOJ) is thrilled to announce Troy Bell and Roberto “Robbie” Cisneros are its newest scholarship recipients. Both freshmen at William Paterson University, Troy and Robbie exemplify the next generation of jazz excellence.
HOJ, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting minority students pursuing careers in jazz, provides four-year university scholarships coupled with mentorship opportunities. The organization also champions jazz awareness in communities where the genre once thrived, creating vibrant performance opportunities for musicians of all ages.
Meet the Scholars
Robert "Robbie" Cisneros: A Trumpet Talent on the Rise
From Wayne, NJ, Robbie Cisneros’ love of jazz blossomed from his father’s extensive music collection. Robbie began playing trumpet in fourth grade but found his true calling during a summer jazz program at William Paterson University.
A graduate of the Jazz House Kids program, Robbie is committed to developing his expressive, melodic style. Drawing inspiration from legends like Roy Hargrove and Freddie Hubbard, Robbie’s tone and warmth reflect his dedication to the craft. Memorable performances with Wyclef Jean and Christian McBride have fueled his passion for music.
As an HOJ scholar, Robbie will work with trumpeter Antione Drye to hone his skills and navigate the world of jazz. He also plans to explore sound engineering and expand his artistic voice.
Troy Bell: A Versatile Guitar Virtuoso
From Piscataway, NJ, Troy Bell has been surrounded by music his entire life. His father, a music teacher, introduced him to music theory and piano at a young age. By 12, Troy discovered the guitar, which quickly became his passion.
Troy's musical background is as diverse as his talent. He performed on Broadway in School of Rock as a pianist before transitioning to the guitar, inspired by its versatility. Gospel music, played in his church, remains a foundational influence, as does his admiration for guitar legends like Wes Montgomery and Eric Gales.
Now a freshman, Troy describes his style as a "melting pot" of gospel, R&B, jazz, and rock. His high school performance at NJPAC solidified his dreams, and he is excited to work with his HOJ mentor, saxophonist Jaleel Shaw, to refine his artistry. Troy aspires to tour, produce music events, and perform on Broadway.
Heart of Jazz: Raising Awareness and Building Opportunities
In addition to supporting scholars, Heart of Jazz has been actively fostering performance opportunities. Over Labor Day weekend, HOJ participated in Orrin Evans’ Club Patio Jazz Day in Pennsylvania, showcasing scholars and other young musicians. In October, HOJ sponsored performances at the Exit Zero Jazz Festival in Cape May, NJ, where HOJ scholars Violet Mujica and James Ambrose led a sextet.
These events demonstrate HOJ’s commitment to both mentoring the next generation and celebrating the rich legacy of jazz in its historical communities.
