Lookin Back: The New Philly Sound Debuts at Club Patio Day 2025
This past Labor Day, Heart of Jazz proudly debuted The New Philly Sound 2025 at Orrin Evans’ Club Patio Day, introducing our newest band of extraordinary young Philadelphia-area artists. The quintet — Juilliard students Aidan McKeon and Ace Yuji Williams, along with Temple students Mehki Boone, Ry Miller, and Justin Griggs — brought a fresh, vibrant energy to the stage and wowed audiences with their innovative sound.
The day also featured the William Paterson University Septet, including talented Heart of Jazz Scholarship recipients Troy Bell (guitar), Roberto Cisneros (trumpet), Violet Mujica (trumpet), and James Ambrose (saxophone). This fall, we were proud to add our fifth and sixth scholars, expanding our commitment to supporting emerging jazz talent. These scholarships help reduce financial barriers for students pursuing their dreams, ensuring they can focus on developing their artistry. By nurturing these young musicians, Heart of Jazz strengthens the future of jazz while fulfilling our mission to build community and promote the next generation of Philadelphia-area artists.
Thanks to legendary Philly pianist Orrin Evans, who generously provided a platform for these young musicians, the event was a memorable celebration of Philadelphia jazz, talent, and community. Club Patio Day continues to be a cherished tradition, and this year’s edition highlighted the next generation of jazz innovators.
