Inspiring the Next Generation: A Day with the KIPP West Bounce Band

On January 23, 2025, The Heart of Jazz Foundation brought its mission to life with a special clinic at KIPP West Philadelphia Preparatory Charter School, working with the school’s Bounce Band. Led by Heart of Jazz board members Orrin Evans and Enoch Smith, Jr., the session offered students an unforgettable afternoon of inspiration, mentorship, and live jazz.

 

Pianist Orrin Evans performed alongside the students, offering hands-on musical guidance and elevating the energy in the room with his dynamic presence.

Meanwhile, Enoch Smith, Jr. inspired the young musicians with heartfelt words of encouragement, helping them see the power of their potential through music and perseverance.

 

Jazz trumpeter and Music Director at KIPP, Elliot Bild, reflected on the impact of the visit: “I cannot thank the Heart of Jazz organization and Orrin Evans enough for coming to perform with the KIPP West Bounce Band. I was able to watch every single student’s eyes light up when Mr. Evans walked into the room. Through his passion and love of the music, Mr. Evans was able to help all the students rise up to a new level. It was the best the group sounded all year! Every student jumped at the opportunity to solo alongside Mr. Evans. He made every student feel special and appreciated. It was extremely beautiful to watch, and I felt so proud as their director. The students even started walking the halls saying, ‘I’m famous now, I got to play with Mr. Evans.’ I loved seeing them walk taller, with pride, and love of music. Thank you again to the Heart of Jazz organization for making this happen for our students at KIPP West.”

 

Moments like these reflect the heart of our mission—connecting accomplished artists with young musicians to create meaningful, joyful experiences through jazz.
