Event Recap: A Swinging Afternoon at William Paterson University

The Heart of Jazz Scholars and Camille Thurman

On April 6, 2025, the Heart of Jazz Foundation was proud to sponsor one of the acclaimed Jazz Room Series” events at William Paterson University—an afternoon that truly celebrated the power of music, mentorship, and emerging talent.

The event opened with a dynamic performance by the William Paterson University Jazz Quintet, featuring none other than Violet Mujica on trumpet, a current Heart of Jazz Scholarship recipient. Violet’s artistry and command of her instrument were a testament to the kind of excellence our Foundation is honored to support.

Before the headline performance, Camille Thurman held an engaging Q&A session, sharing her insights on music, artistry, and the jazz industry. Attendees had the rare opportunity to learn directly from one of todays leading voices in jazz.

The afternoon continued with a captivating set by renowned vocalist, saxophonist, and Heart of Jazz Board Member Camille Thurman. Performing with her quartet, Camille delivered an exceptional performance that highlighted her signature blend of vocal finesse and instrumental mastery. Her artistry and deep connection to the music created an unforgettable experience for the audience, further underscoring her status as one of todays most compelling jazz artists.

Adding another layer of meaning to the day, Camille is also the Heart of Jazz Mentor to Violet Mujica—an inspiring example of the mentorship and support that lies at the core of our mission.

This unforgettable event not only showcased top-tier jazz performances but also underscored Heart of Jazzs commitment to nurturing the next generation of jazz artists. We are grateful to William Paterson University for their partnership and look forward to more opportunities to celebrate the music we love.
